With more than 25 years of experience, Huy is a versatile professional with an outstanding cross-cultural track record as a global business advisor, entrepreneur, finance specialist, board/C-suite advisor, team builder and change agent in multinational markets. He has diversified experience in both consulting and private corporate settings, running complex and matrix organizations, meeting regulatory challenges, and thriving in constantly changing markets. Huy possesses deep knowledge in financial services, including banking, insurance, asset management, private equity, fintech and digital assets. Additionally, he specializes in accounting change, regulatory remediation, finance transformation, business process and internal controls framework development and remediation, operations, valuation governance and regulatory/statutory reporting for global financial institutions.
Prior to joining Baker Tilly, he built and led the banking and capital markets sector for financial accounting advisory services at a Big Four firm, significantly growing the practice with annual revenues exceeding $100 million. Huy has also held various finance leadership roles, overseeing corporate accounting, financial reporting, SOX internal controls, accounting policy and regulatory compliance at global banking and insurance institutions. Additionally, he spent five years on international assignments in Zurich, Munich, and Seoul during his career at a Big Four firm.
Huy was a member of a Big Four firm steering committee for diversity, equity and inclusion, leading the firm initiatives to drive inclusive culture and social equality for employees and overall communities.
- Extensive experience assisting global financial services clients with accounting change implementation, initial public offerings (IPOs) and carve-outs under both U.S. generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS), with a particular focus on securitization and consolidation, financial instruments and fair value accounting
- Co-led a global project to implement an independent valuation governance framework and target operating model at a large global multinational bank to meet Federal Reserve System (FED) regulatory requirements. Assisted global banks in implementation of regulatory reporting changes, remediation to Matters Requiring Attention (MRA)/Matters Requiring Immediate Attention (MRIA) and other enforcement actions and development of regulatory compliance and governance framework
- Led a finance transformation project at a large U.S. bank to implement system, application and processing (SAP) Bank Analyzer sub-ledger to capture key accounting and reporting events over the life cycle of financial instruments, including target operating model, shared services strategy for on-shore and off-shore
- Led accounting change go-to-market campaign end-to-end solutions for financial services sector across business process, tech and people (audit, tax and consulting) at a Big Four firm, which included current expected credit loss (CECL), revenue recognition, leases, insurance contracts and hedging over a five-year period and generated more than $750 million in revenue
- Built the infrastructure at some major global U.S. banks, insurers, broker dealers to develop policies, implement new accounting standards, and provide accounting and structuring advice related to mortgages, residential mortgage-backed security (RMBS), commercial mortgage-backed security (CMBS), asset backed securities (ABS), and cash and synthetic collateralized debt obligation (CDO)/collateralized loan obligations (CLO)s
- Headed the finance transformation solution at Big Four, representing $30 million revenue yearly, to optimize finance functions for clients with general ledger (G/L) and sub-G/L implementations
- Built and led a global team, based in U.S., UK and India, in implementing hedge accounting managed services solutions for U.S. financial services companies and serving as the catalyst to accelerate managed services solutions
- Deleveraged the insured structured finance and asset liability portfolio with the asset management unit at global insurance company to reduce exposure by more than $4 billion, while limiting losses via restructuring, commuting and repurchasing debts
