Steve Rosenthal is a principal emeritus with Baker Tilly’s forensic, litigation and valuation services practice.
Recognized as a leader in the field of forensic accounting, Steve has earned a reputation for fairness, accuracy and objectivity, which serve as the foundation of his practice. In his career as a forensic accountant, which spans 45 years, Steve has worked on countless insurance claims and cases in the U.S. and abroad, quantifying economic damages in complex industries like manufacturing, technology and energy.
Steve has led investigative accounting teams in the calculation of economic damages in thousands of claims related to high profile events, including severe flooding in Thailand in 2011, the earthquake and tsunami in Japan a massive landslide in a U.S. copper mine and the World Trade Center collapse on September 11, 2001.
Steve regularly appears as an expert witness in a wide variety of legal venues, serving as both an advisor and partner to insurance professionals and lawyers when high stakes financial matters are at hand. Steve’s leadership has extended to where he works as well. He was a founding partner of RGL Forensics before joining the company with Baker Tilly and helped lead the firm’s global insurance practice.
- Quantifying the business interruption claim filed by a major media owner when their broadcasting tower on top of the World Trade Center was destroyed on September 11, 2001
- Evaluating numerous multimillion dollar contingent time element claims made by hi-tech companies when a major supplier could not produce and provide HDD (hard disk drive) components due to the Thailand floods of 2011. Production was interrupted for several months, forcing the technology companies to establish temporary purchase agreements with other vendors to obtain the HDD components, often at higher prices
- Measuring the property damage, extra expense and downstream business interruption losses following a fire at a semiconductor plant in Malaysia
- Quantifying the damages following the devastating 1980 fire at the MGM Grand Hotel in Las Vegas. The claim included property damage, extra expense and business interruption losses totaling over U.S. $220 million
- Performing a forensic financial analysis when a fire destroyed a restaurant in Nevada, which ultimately proved the restaurant owner had financial motive to burn down his restaurant. The owner eventually went to prison for criminal arson
- Quantifying the losses for a chicken processing plant in Mississippi that suffered extensive damage when Hurricane Katrina hit. The claim covered property, extra expense and business interruption losses
- Measuring the property damage, extra expense and business interruption losses that resulted when a crane used to load and unload vessels in an Alaska fishing area collapsed
