Client background
Pennsylvania West Virginia (PAWV) Healthcare Consulting Group is a joint effort of Baker Tilly working in collaboration with nursing home facilities within the state of West Virginia to modernize their state compliance reporting system.
The business challenge
Faced with an outdated Microsoft Access database system, the PAWV Healthcare Consulting Group required a swift and secure solution to enhance their compliance reporting system within a six-month window, aligning with the annual timeline for cost reports submission and meeting the strict demands of healthcare regulation adherence.
The pre-existing system, crucial for the creation of mandatory cost reports, failed to match the evolving needs for efficiency and adaptability in a landscape of rigorous healthcare compliance standards. The new system needed to replicate and improve upon the functionality of the former database system, which involved user inputs, file imports and the generation of extensive 20-plus page cost reports, among other multi-page documents. It was essential for the new solution to not only streamline these processes but also ensure a more intuitive and efficient workflow to meet the evolving demands of state healthcare regulations.
Managing a wide array of facilities and facing a pressing deadline, the PAWV Healthcare Consulting Group enlisted Baker Tilly’s experience to engineer a streamlined and future-proof healthcare reporting platform.
Strategy and solution
In pursuit of a low-code solution capable of meeting the state’s need for rapid deployment, Baker Tilly evaluated several options, including traditional web application development, before ultimately selecting Microsoft Power Pages. This decision was influenced by Power Pages' market maturity, extensive options for custom development and most importantly, the robust integration with Microsoft's suite of cloud services. Additionally, Power Pages’ synergy with Microsoft Power Apps would enable efficient handling of user data, while Microsoft Power BI's advanced data reporting capabilities ensured the creation of comprehensive compliance reports.
Baker Tilly, in collaboration with feedback from nursing home facility representatives and state officials, successfully overhauled the cost report system, incorporating enhancements that the previous solution could not support. A comprehensive and dynamic website was developed using Microsoft Power Pages, granting the state the flexibility to make updates as needed.
The review and revamp of the cost report workflow supported by the new reporting software has laid the groundwork for enhanced productivity and data management. With the new system in place, the state has not only streamlined its reporting but also strengthened its infrastructure for ongoing adaptation to healthcare regulatory changes. This proactive approach has positioned the state as a leader in leveraging technology for compliance efficiency, setting a precedent for future innovation in public health administration.
